Northern Development has approved $10,742 to complete upgrades on the Port Clements Community Hall and other news

Village of Port Clements – Northern Development Initiative Trust has approved $10,742 to complete upgrades on the Port Clements Community Hall. The community hall has been the central gathering place for Port Clements residents, as well as those from all over Haida Gwaii for decades. Several upgrades will be made to the hall including the installation of insulation and vapor barriers above the ceiling and installing a high efficiency oil furnace to service the building. As well, the addition of two air exchange heat pumps, which should dramatically reduce heating costs. This grant was approved through Northern Development’s Community Halls and Recreation Facilities program.

Village of Granisle – Northern Development Initiative Trust has approved $30,000 for the Village of Granisle Memorial Park Enhancement. The purpose of this project is to enhance the recently developed community park and gathering space to increase its potential for revenue generating activities. This project will create an economic opportunity that the community has not had in the past. The community structure (gazebo), which is located in the park and features an expansive view of Babine Lake, will become a prime location for weddings, family gatherings, reunions, music in the park, Canada Day, Granisle Days, and other community events. The project includes several renovations such as the construction of a wheelchair accessible washroom with a shower, outside access to washrooms with a  covered ramp and a ramp to the gazebo in the park. This grant was approved through Northern Development’s Community Halls and Recreation Facilities program.

District of Taylor – Northern Development Initiative Trust has approved $20,000 for the District of Taylor’s Digital Information Board. The project will install a digital/LED information board at the District of Taylor’s municipal office. A digital information board located along the Alaska Highway will increase tourism and generate additional revenue as people travel through or visit the community. The board could also generate other economic opportunities for businesses that focus solely on tourism and events. This grant was approved through Northern Development’s Marketing Initiatives program.

District of Houston – Northern Development Initiative Trust has approved $12,500 for the Houston Snowmobile Club Society Trail Improvements.  The Houston Snowmobile Club will build new snowmobile trails around the Houston area. The snowmobile trails are used for hiking, biking, and all-terrain vehicles in the summer months. The improvements apply to the Dungate, Sibola, and Telkwa Range Trails around the Houston area and involve trail brushing, signage replacement and bridge improvements.  This grant was approved through Northern Development’s Marketing Initiatives program.

Village of Valemount – Northern Development Initiative Trust has approved $30,000 for the Village of Valemount’s Mountain Bike Park, to rebuild the Swift Creek Bridge, as stage one of a mountain bike park in Valemount. The proposed project’s goal is to develop Valemount as a marketable mountain biking destination in Western Canada. The project will help provide sufficient trail infrastructure and amenities to warrant a multi-day stay within Valemount, while helping to foster the development of Valemount as a healthy, active outdoor community. This grant was approved through Northern Development’s Community Halls and Recreation Facilities program.

City of Prince George – Northern Development Initiative Trust has approved $30,000 for the Tabor Mountain Freestyle Board Club Society to construct a new multi-use clubhouse. The clubhouse will support participants, activities and the storage of club equipment. The project will include materials for construction of the building, the site preparation and foundation for the building. The proposed project will be used as an event site for the 2015 Canada Winter Games. The clubhouse will provide a place for a participant dressing and preparation area, for the competitors of the Games, as well as a shelter for the event officials and judges during this time. The estimation for the project completion date is November, 2014. This grant was approved through Northern Development’s Community Halls and Recreation Facilities program.
