Economic Development Capacity Building

Program Overview

Economic Development Capacity Building funding provides up to $35,000 annually from the Cross Regional Account to municipalities and regional districts. This funding is provided each year to build economic development capacity throughout central and northern British Columbia.

Communities are encouraged to partner on economic development projects, as at least $5,000 of the annual funding provided must be used to collaborate with another municipality, regional district, First Nations band, or Northern Development. Of the total $35,000 available, funds not identified for collaborative projects can be directed to support economic development activities that are incremental to the municipality’s or regional district’s base economic development budget.

• Stable annual distribution of discretionary economic development funding in an efficient and accountable manner to municipalities and regional districts located within the Northern Development region.
• Increased local and regional government capacity in central and northern British Columbia communities to undertake initiatives supporting growth and diversification of local economies.
• Increased collaboration between communities on economic development initiatives.

To increase the economic development capacity of municipalities and regional districts within the Northern Development Initiative Trust region.

Complete Application Forms with all required attachments should be provided electronically to Northern Development by email.  

Annual Reporting

Municipalities or regional districts must provide complete reporting for any outstanding approval supported by the Economic Development Capacity Building program prior to applying for a new year of funding support. Northern Development staff will review and verify complete reporting for the prior year and, based on acceptance, a grant reimbursement for the prior year is issued to the municipality or regional district.
